Jackie Joyner-Kersee might seem to be an unusual source of inspiration for the Modern American Dance Company. After all, MADCO is a dance ensemble, and East St. Louis-born Joyner-Kersee is an Olympic track-and-field gold medalist. But upon further thought, the connection between the two becomes more clear. Dancers -- and their sore muscles -- certainly understand the athleticism that goes into truly rocking their art form, and athletes, who are always working toward maximum power and impact, definitely need a bit of deftness in their movements for decisive success. If you don't believe the link between the two now, we're guessing that after this weekend, you definitely will -- at least, you will if you spend any time at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road). That's where MADCO stages Uprising, the company's season-opening concert, which features a work that pays homage to the drive and strength of Joyner-Kersee, as well as a piece by ground-breaking dance rock stars Pilobolus, and a handful of premieres by choreographers local and otherwise. Uprising is presented at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Sunday (November 15 through 17). Tickets for the dance concert cost $15 to $25 and are available at 314-516-4949 or
