Dancing Like She's Danced Before

Flashdance -- The Musical may be the perfect storm of '80s nostalgia. The movie was a dark horse hit that made Jennifer Beals a household name, Beals spawned a fashion movement with her collarless sweatshirt, and the soundtrack was a huge seller on the back of the title track ("Flashdance -- What a Feeling") and follow-up single "Maniac." Now all of that comes to you in the form of a musical, with sixteen new songs written expressly for the story of Alex Owens, a Pittsburgh native who works as a sexy welder by day and an exotic dancer by night. But what she really wants to do is study modern dance at the academy. Can a working class girl make the big time as a dancer? Don't bet against her -- it's the '80s, after all. Flashdance -- The Musical hits the Peabody Opera House (Fourteenth and Market streets; 314-241-1888 or www.peabodyoperahouse.com) at 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday (January 8 through 13). Tickets are $22 through $92.
