Billy Elliot did well as a film when it was released in 2000. It's fared even better since it made the balletic leap from silver screen to theatrical stage -- to such an extent that Billy Elliot the Musical mopped up at the 2009 Tony Awards ceremony, winning ten Tonys including Best Musical. Set in a small Northern English coal mining town, the inspirational story centers on young Billy’s dreams of becoming a ballet dancer despite both his father’s and older brother’s vehement disdain for his "unmanly" goal. Sir Elton John, who knows a thing or two about persevering and succeeding in the face of macho obstacles, wrote the music for this stage version of Billy; the lyrics are by Lee Hall, who wrote the original screenplay.
