Richard Wagner is famous for bringing sturm und drang to opera, but he also wrote a comedy. Die Meistersinger von Nuernberg is a historical piece inspired by Renaissance Germany's tradition of master craftsmen who were also gifted poets and singers. Walther is a young knight who wants to win the next singing contest so he can win the hand of the beautiful Eva, whose father has decreed she will wed a meistersinger. Walther breaks all the rules with his free-form songs, but Hans Sachs, the greatest singer in Nuernberg, believes that Walther is what the art form needs to progress. Can Hans help Walther tame his wildness enough to win the contest? No spoilers, but few comedies end on a down note. The Metropolitan Opera broadcasts Die Meistersinger in HD to select theaters nationwide.
