How to really heat up your home: 1) Get your furnace up to 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit. 2) Put a load of sand, limestone and ash inside, and wait for them to become liquefied. 3) Stick a long pipe in there, and whip up the resulting liquid glass. 4) Roll it around on a steel table until you get a shape you like. 5) Blow. After you get a bunch of these shapes, set them around your house to harden and cool into glass ornaments, while your house slowly heats up. N.B.: The Riverfront Times does not recommend this method for home-heating. But if you are interested in the beautiful byproducts of the procedure, by all means, get to the annual Holiday Sale at Third Degree Glass Factory (5200 Delmar Boulevard; 314-367-4527 or www.stlglass.com), where hand-blown Christmas ornaments start at $20. Plus, there's the added fun of seeing the Third Degree artists create the amazing colored-glass art before your very eyes! The sale runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday (December 16 and 17).
