We hear so many sounds in our day-to-day lives, from the mundane and familiar (dogs barking, horns honking) to the somewhat less snooze-inducing (sirens, music, even fireworks). It's not often, though, that we have the opportunity to grab a listen to some truly dazzling sounds, such as those that will reverberate throughout Saint Louis University's Chaifetz Arena (1 South Compton Avenue) during the Showdown: Historically Black College & University Drum Line Show & Recruitment Fair. This percussive spectacular, presented by the Show-Me Sound Organization (www.showmesound.org), features musicians from Lincoln University, Howard University and Harris-Stowe State University, among other schools, and these drummers will wow, pop, bang and boom the afternoon away. The show culminates in a special tribute to Africa, courtesy of the Lane Tabernacle CME Church choir and the Show-Me Sound F.O.C.U.S. Drumline. Tickets to the Showdown cost $15 (at 314-534-1111 or www.metrotix.com); the performance begins at 2 p.m.
