Some of the greatest music Western civilization has produced has come at the close of certain composers' careers: Beethoven's late string quartets; the Beatles' final single, the sublime "Let it Be"; and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Requiem Mass in D Minor. The Requiem, as it's more generally known, was composed in 1791 but left unfinished at the time of Mozart's death on December 5 of that year. The piece is as famous for the many enigmas and controversies enveloping it as for the surpassing power of the music itself, and it has held audiences around the world dependably in the grip of its spell since its premiere performance in Vienna shortly after its creator's passing.
