Ms. Day might be fancy, but she's fancy in an old fashioned sort of way, and she feels so alone sometimes. She looks around and all she sees are decidedly unfancy, modern things, like fast-food drive-throughs and crazy newfangled video games that turn players into zombies (for the record there is nothing fancy about a shambling, zombified gamer). What we need is a good old-school church picnic to straighten things out. The Parish Picnic at St. Stephen Church (11514 Highway A, Richwoods; 573-678-2207) ought to do the trick. This parish has been around since 1841 and the event features something fabulous called a "fancy booth." It goes without saying that Ms. Day can't wait! In addition to that fanciness, there will be a beer wagon, a free wine and cheese tasting, bingo (no video games here!), live music, stuff for kids to do and more. And, of course, no mystery-meat value meals will be served; you've got your fried-chicken and barbecued-ham dinners to fill you up from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. ($3.50 for children, $8 for adults). You know, sometimes getting back to the basics is the fanciest thing you can do.
