Feel the Fierceness

Trust Ms. Day: She knows how difficult it can be to put together cute outfits. When you turn to magazines for inspiration, you either find garments that won't come within a thousand miles of St. Louis boutiques (give or take) — and if they do, it won't be for a couple of years — or you come across impossible-to-wear ensembles that only look proportional on super-tall, super-skinny teenagers. Even though Tyra has done her best to revolutionize the fashion industry, the industry doesn't seem to want to change much (thanks anyway, T. Banks!). Fortunately, events such as the Jazzin' on the Runway Fashion Show & Live Jazz Concert provide wearable, doable, stylish inspiration for those of us in the Midwest who want to feel chic here (and when we take trips to the coasts). At this fundraising fashion show, pieces from the Independence Center's Clubhouse Shop will be marched on down the runway, demonstrating for us how we can put together outfits, and how to do so with items from a resale shop. How affordably fashionable! Pieces from local designers will also be featured in the show, and "Lady Jazz" Mae Wheeler classes things up with a concert. Tickets to attend cost $35 to $40 (at 314-880-5405 or www.independencecenter.org), and proceeds benefit Wheeler's Professional & Amateur Artists Recognized and the Independence Center, which provides assistance for adults with mental illness. The show is held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Clubhouse Shop (4245 Forest Park Avenue). Don't be stylishly late!
