Fool for Love

Barbra Streisand jump-started her career with her portrayal of Ziegfeld Follies star Fanny Brice in the musical Funny Girl. Though the musical takes liberties with the truth, Funny Girl still follows the basics. Despite her own mother telling her she's not pretty enough for show biz, Fanny breaks into Vaudeville and discovers she's a natural comic. Before long she's the star she always knew she could be, but her passionate relationship with bad gambler Nicky Arnstein threatens to bring her low. Will she choose fame and fortune over the love of her life? Stray Dog Theatre presents Funny Girl at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday (July 24 through August 9) at the Tower Grove Abbey (2336 Tennessee Avenue; 314-865-1995 or There are two additional performances, at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, and at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 9. Admission is $18 to $20.
