There's nothing better than a loyal friend. Timon, wealthy and generous with his money and his kindness, regularly fetes his friends and hangers-on to the point of profligacy. And then suddenly he's broke and in danger of losing his home and his lands. When he goes to his friends seeking help, what does he receive in return? Absolutely nothing, save a few pointed insults. Now that his money's gone, Timon's a pariah, and accordingly becomes a misanthrope roaming the wilderness heaping invective on polite society. William Shakespeare's Timon of Athens is a tragedy, sure, but only because it reflects some of the darker corners of human nature.
