Under the direction of William N. Eisendrath, Jr., the Washington University Gallery of Art acquired a treasure trove of seminal modern work from the likes of Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Henri Matisse in the '60s. Eisendrath is credited with introducing this brave, bold generation of abstract artists to the contemporary St. Louis art scene, and the museum even went on to sponsor traveling exhibitions of post-war experimental art that had far-reaching effects outside the city limits.
From Picasso to Fontana: Collecting Modern and Postwar Art in the Eisendrath Years, 1960-1968 showcases art acquired during this period.
