Opole is hardly the most high-profile of Polish towns to most Europeans and Americans, but this medium-size city in the southwest part of the country is known to Poles as the capital of Polish song; the National Festival of Polish Songs has been held there every year since 1963. The attractive old town on the Oder River also boasts a first-class band: Opole, the Philharmonic of Poland, which was founded in 1947 and has been going strong ever since. After years of establishing its reputation as a high-quality orchestra throughout Europe, the Opole Philharmonic is undertaking its first coast-to-coast tour of the United States this winter, and St. Louis is lucky enough to be on the itinerary.
