Gates' Way to the North

The "north" referenced in Dry Bones and Other Parables from the North, the title of the new Theaster Gates' exhibition at Bruno David Gallery, is not the cold land of the Arctic but the neighborhood of Hyde Park. Working with the students of Holy Trinity Catholic School, Gates created art that responded to the north St. Louis neighborhood that began as New Bremen, an independent town of German immigrants. Inspired in part by the biblical Book of Ezekiel and its elements of resurrection and the construction of a new Temple, Gates and the students sought to capture the current state of cultural and spiritual life in Hyde Park, as well as offer a way to discuss the past and future of the neighborhood. Theaster Gates: Dry Bones and Other Parables from the North opens with a free public reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at Bruno David Gallery. The show remains up through Saturday, June 5, and the gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday.
Wednesdays-Saturdays. Starts: May 15. Continues through June 5, 2010
