The St. Louis Symphony might be the only entity that embraces New Year's Eve amateurs along with regulars. Surprised? Oh, but we're not talking about those inexperienced with their liquor consumption — we're talking about orchestra amateurs who have never brought in the new year with the sounds of classical music. At the symphony's fifth annual New Year's Eve concert, all are welcome to enjoy the surprise pieces the band members have prepared just for this evening and watch as David Robertson conducts. Before the show, feel free to walk around Grand Center for some First Night fun — the opening ceremony takes place at 6 p.m. ($4 to $8) — then head into the warm, welcoming environs of Powell Symphony Hall (718 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-1700) by 7:30 p.m. for the concert. Tickets to the holiday performance cost $25 to $120; visit www.slso.org to make a purchase and for details about where to park.
