Getting to Know the King of Siam

Adapted from the novel Anna and the King of Siam, Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I tells the tale of a young governess who arrives in Siam to care for the royal children. When the show opened on Broadway in 1951, it was an immediate hit, and Yul Brenner's portrayal of the King catapulted him to superstardom. Brenner would go on to play the role in the feature-film production, numerous stage revivals and even a short-lived television sitcom in 1972. Contemporary directors have struggled to get musicalgoers to accept a non-Brenner King of Siam, but this Monday the Muny in Forest Park shows audiences that there is plenty of life left in The King and I with its new production directed by Rob Ruggiero.
