Most of us spend the weekend prior to Thanksgiving dreaming of steaming bowls of mashed potatoes, Aunt Sue's buttery homemade rolls and Grandma's never-ending selection of pies. But the smart folks at the St. Louis Vegetarian Society skip the daydreaming and get a jump start on the salivating with today's Turkey-Free Thanksgiving from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of St. Louis (6501 Wydown Boulevard, Clayton). Sponsored by Whole Foods Market and starring dishes prepared by chefs from St. Louis Community College School of Culinary Arts, this all-you-can-eat vegetarian feast ensures you'll never miss the turkey. The menu features recipes from the society's cookbook and includes watercress salad with spiced mango-ginger dressing and "turkey" Amaretto. Advance tickets are $15 and can be purchased at MoKaBe's (3606 Arsenal) or the Natural Way (8110 Big Bend Boulevard, Webster Groves). Tickets at the door are $20.
