The holidays can be depressing for any number of reasons, from going broke purchasing gifts to receiving another gigantic cartoon-character sweatshirt in the flattering color of blaugeh. Yet in spite of all this, some people are still trying to make you smile — like the cats over at the Black Cat Theatre (2810 Sutton Boulevard, Maplewood; www.blackcattheatre.org or 314-963-8800). This newly opened space plays host to the comedic one-act "Lily's Hat" at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday (December 7 through 16). So you've got a new place to visit and a funny play about the technological divide between the generations — both should help you feel more happy. Plus, each night after the theatrical presentation, a local music act takes the stage (on Friday, December 8, Kim Massie channels Aretha Franklin). Well, you like music; this just might be OK! To grasp at what little happiness is offered you this holiday season, leave the astonishingly awful presents at home, and bring a mere $20 for your admission to the holiday cabaret. An affordable night out that's stylish and fun? There really is a Santa Claus.
