Honor Thy Mother...with Fun

Mother's Day plans can be tricky. You would like to spend quality time with Mom, but you also want to do something nice for her. Preparing, say, a brunch with all of her favorite eats would certainly be a lovely gesture — however, one that would likely lack in Mom conversation time. After all, you'll have to check on the quiche, worry about the dishes, refill people's glasses and the like. But simply sitting around and chatting with Mother Dear doesn't sound all that quality to you either. What you need to do is bring that special lady to the Art Fair at Laumeier Sculpture Park (12580 Rott Road, Sunset Hills; 314-615-5278). The fair is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 9 (visit www.laumeier.org for hours on Friday and Saturday, May 7 and 8), and during that time you two will be able to browse the beautiful wares and listen to live music, while you talk about life and what's going on with her. Pay attention to what she's oohhh-ing and aaahhh-ing over — she'll have lots of choices, from jewelry and photography to clay works and glass pieces — so you can go ahead and make a purchase when she's not looking. Then, when you're walking to the car, present her with the surreptitiously purchased present and watch her grin from ear to ear. Admission to the Art Fair is $5 to $8 — a small price to pay for the best Mother's Day ever.
