The world wants to know: How does he do it? In his book Teach Like Your Hair's on Fire, Rafe Esquith reveals the methods and madness of room 56 at Hobart Boulevard Elementary School in Los Angeles. His class of fifth graders comes from the dangerous and poverty-stricken south central neighborhood of Los Angeles, and often English is not these kids' first language. Esquith's students are extraordinary, however; they arrive at school early and leave at 5 p.m., perform Shakespeare, play rock & roll, and learn.
