It's a Classical Gas

We're ankle-deep in July, and not only are the outdoor concert series in full swing, they're actually proliferating. And to that we say, "Sweet." This evening at 7:30 p.m. on the Washington University Campus Brookings Quadrangle (Brookings and Hoyt drives), conductor James Richards leads the Gateway Festival Orchestra through "Midwest Musical Masters," a concert emphasizing the works of St. Louis-area composers. The program features One of Ours: A Cather Symphony by University of Missouri-St. Louis composer-in-residence Barbara Harbach, the music of Scott Joplin and a violin solo by thirteen-year-old Clayton Penrose in Saint-Sa`ns' Havanaise (Saint-Sa`ns was not from these parts, but we'll give him a pass because we love the Havanaise). Admission is free; call 314-935-4841 for more information.
