Kevin Sorbo's professional image was one of strength and virility -- of course, when you're portraying a Greek demigod, that's sort of the whole point. Sorbo's easy-going, fighting-the-good-fight performance as the title character in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys
made the show a hit for six years. So it comes as quite a shock to learn that Sorbo suffered a series of strokes between the fourth and fifth seasons that ravaged his health and left him temporarily paralyzed and greatly weakened. Despite these physical obstacles, Sorbo continued with the show (in a smaller capacity) while working his way back to health, and then went on to star as Captain Dylan Hunt for five seasons of Andromeda
. How did he not only continue working, but keep this illness secret for more than a decade? Sorbo explains all in his memoir, True Strength: My Journey from Hercules to Mere Mortal and How Nearly Dying Saved My Life
. The St. Louis Jewish Book Festival presents Kevin Sorbo at 7:30 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center (2 Millstone Campus Drive, Creve Coeur; www.stljewishbookfestival.org
), where he'll discuss his book and do a Q&A with the audience. Tickets are $15.
