King of the Shorts

George Saunders has single-handedly revived the short-story form for a larger American audience. His unique voice combines sharp outrage and gentle humanism in a way that is intelligent and familiar, and yet like no one else currently writing. Once you try one Saunders you end up devouring most of his work. His latest collection, Tenth of December, is in paperback, and further cements his stature as king of the shorts. Saunders visits Left Bank Books' downtown store (321 North Tenth Street; 314-436-3049 or www.left-bank.com) at 7 p.m. tonight to discuss the book and his work. Admission is $15 to $20 and includes one paperback copy of Saunders' Tenth of December.
