Even 55 years on, Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita still dazzles. The film takes you into the decadent high society of Rome, as seen through the eyes of Marcello (Marcello Mastroianni), a struggling novelist who works for celebrity gossip magazines. Marcello has a girlfriend who wants to get married, but he'd rather drift from party to party and girl to girl. Is it fear of commitment, or has he become so focused on the next fantasy that he's become detached from his own life? Anita Ekberg and Anouk Aimee co-star, and if you watch carefully you'll spot Nico (of "the Velvet Underground and" fame) at one of Marcello's many parties. La Dolce Vita screens at the Tivoli Theatre as part of the Mildred Lane Kemper Museum's series A Critical Eye: Avant-Garde Cinema of the 1960s.
