The second of the Bible-centric musicals of the '70s, Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak's Godspell combines the Gospel of Saint Matthew with familiar hymns and the popular music of its era to convey the message of Jesus Christ in a modern setting. With a Superman-style "S" on his shirt and a song in his heart, Jesus warns his followers of the spiritually empty pursuit of money, stresses the qualities of unstrained mercy and forgiveness and urges them to make today better rather than worrying about what might happen tomorrow. It's hard to argue with the philosophy, even if you don't subscribe to the religion. The Muny presents the still-rousing Godspell at 8:15 p.m. Monday through Sunday (July 13 through 19) at the Muny in Forest Park (314-361-1900 or www.muny.org). Tickets are $9 to $66.
