Leave It to Dance

St. Louis' own Modern American Dance Company (MADCO) celebrates its 30th-anniversary season this weekend at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-4949 or www.touhill.org). MADCO has invited choreographers from New York, Florida and California to delight the audience with pieces combining the athleticism and approach to motion that demonstrate MADCO's dynamic style. Robert Battle has choreographed a peppy, jazz-and-African-dance-inspired piece, and Michael Foley's The Carpet pairs up the dancers and shows off their physical strength. Plus, former St. Louisan Michael Mizerany's Strange Addiction — set to the music of St. Louis composer Henry Claude — mimics the reactions and behaviors of drug users, and Todd Weeks (MADCO associate artistic director) premieres new work as well. Saturday's gala performance (at 8 p.m.) is $30 and includes a dessert reception in the terrace lobby with the dancers and choreographers; the shows on Friday (8 p.m.) and Sunday (2 p.m.) cost $18 to $20 (February 2 through 4). For more information call the company at 314-341-5407.
