Light, Camera, Action

Filmmaker Peter Rose is interested in time, space, light, perception and especially language. These are the familiar elements of all film, but in Rose's films they are presented in markedly different ways than in a conventional film. Light in his short film Studies in Transfalumination means modified flashlights and stripped video projectors lasing across a table, a rock, the underside of a bridge and other mundane elements to show how visually complex the world is. In Secondary Currents, a narrator delivers a stream of nonsense that doesn't match the subtitles, so that thought and speech are garbled but still convey a sense of information. In Metalogue, a man delivers a monologue on the nature of time, memory and language; Rose hypercuts the digital video and reassembles it so that the narrator "speaks" in a gestural language while the actual language echoes the subject matter and the format.
