Lillying the Gilded (Age)

How to double your decadence in one easy weekend: Find yourself a fully refurbished historic mansion. In St. Louis your best option is something in the Romanesque Revival style of the Gilded Age (think Union Station). With its 42 rooms and 22 fireplaces, the 1890 Samuel Cupples House (3673 West Pine Mall on the Saint Louis University campus) should do nicely. Now, add period furnishings, seven intricate stained-glass windows and some of the finest pieces from SLU’s renowned art collection. And for extra fancy, drape all those rooms in flowers, as twelve members of the St. Louis Florist Network have done for this week’s Rooms in Bloom event. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, you can ogle (and sniff) the Gilded Age in ultimate decadence, with floral arrangements designed to enhance each major room in the Cupples House. Fall in love in the conservatory (arranged by Geechi’s Flowers), lose yourself in the southwest study (decorated by Wolf’s Flower Shop), and restore your soul in the master bedroom (enhanced by Eckert Florist). The whole extravaganza is free (how’s that for decadent?) though a $5 donation is recommended. Have your servant call 314-977-2666 or visit for more information.
