Video blogging through social networking sites such as YouTube and MySpace allow the public unprecedented opportunities for self-promotion. In the case of artist Maya Escobar, she’s working overtime, promoting no less than five facets of herself in her series Acciones Plásticas. The daughter of a Jewish mother and Guatemalan father, Escobar has created five “dolls”: The Orthodox Jew, The JAP, The Chach, The Sexy Latina and The Mayan, each a satire of the personalities she finds projected onto herself -- and at times, reflects. Escobar performs as each of these characters, and the videos inevitably incite a reaction online. In response new videos are created, forming an ongoing dialogue between the artist and the audience. Escobar’s new media work is one of four exhibitions opening Friday, October 19, at the Bruno David Gallery (3721 Washington Boulevard, 314-531-3030 or www.brunodavidgallery.com). Also featured are new works by Chris Kahler, Corey Escoto and Island Press. A free, public reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday opens the multiple shows, which remain up through Saturday, December 1. The Bruno David Gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday and by appointment.
