Peruvian novelist Mario Vargas Llosa began his career with weighty, cerebral novels that slyly attacked the military dictatorship of his homeland (The Time of the Hero and Conversation in the Cathedral) then turned to humorous examinations of romance (Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter) and other irrational behavior. Regardless of his chosen subject matter, Vargas Llosa displays a dazzling mastery of interwoven dialogue and a keen eye for injustices both political and personal. His long and distinguished career has seen him hold political office in Peru, win a Nobel Prize for literature in 2010 and be awarded the St. Louis Literary Award -- this last happens this evening at the Saint Louis University John Cook School of Business auditorium (3674 Lindell Boulevard).
