This new year is off to a brisk and chilly start, which fits well with the theme of Hans Christian Andersen's "Little Match Girl." A poor girl tries to sell matches on a frosty New Year's Eve. Unable to return home empty-handed for fear of being beaten, the girl sits in an alcove and lights her matches to keep warm; visions of Christmas and her beloved grandmother appear in the night. It doesn't end as cheerfully as you would think, but Brett Abigana turned the tale into a haunting piece of music for flute and percussion that Chamber Project St. Louis presents this evening as part of its program Weave. The group is joined by percussionist Jeffrey Barudin for Weave, which also includes Ingolf Dahl's Concerto a tre and Steve Reich's Vermont Counterpoint on amplified marimba. The show is at 7:30 p.m. at the Tavern of Fine Arts (313 Belt Avenue; www.chamberprojectstl.org). Admission is free.
