Astrophysicist Lyman Spitzer's idea for an extra-terrestrial telescope stationed outside Earth's pesky ultraviolet and infrared light-sucking atmosphere began as a dream in 1946 and reached fruition in 1990, when the Hubble Space Telescope finally settled into orbit. No one would argue that the HST hasn't brought amazing insight into the birth of stars and galaxies, but is it worth a risky, pricey repair mission? Where's the balance between scientific advancement and financial responsibility? Get in on the donnybrook at 6:30 p.m. during "Is Hubble Worth the Trouble?" the latest installment of Science Café at the James S. McDonnell Planetarium in Forest Park. Your $20 admission gets you a complimentary beverage, light snacks, a cash bar, and three hours of dialogue and debate with David Ritchey, the planetarium's associate director.
