Nutcracker Now!

Every summer Ms. Day kicks herself for not reaching optimum seasonal satisfaction. All winter long she laments the cold and longs for warmer temperatures, and then when she gets precisely what she asks for, she thinks about the coziness of fall and the holiday season. At least she's not alone. The folks at Tigerlily Events are feeling a little Christmassy, too, and have chosen this weekend as the perfect time to present St. Louisan Rose Lane Davis' A Hard Nut to Crack, A Child's Dream: The Adventures of Clara and the Hard Nut, which is an adaptation of The Nutcracker. Featuring assorted dance styles — including modern and African — A Hard Nut to Crack provides a different feel from the classic ballet and even complements Tchaikovsky's score with Duke Ellington's jazzy version of The Nutcracker Suite and some original compositions. Catch the holiday spirit alongside Ms. Day at the Missouri History Museum (Lindell Boulevard and DeBaliviere Avenue; 314-746-4599 or when A Hard Nut to Crack is presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday, 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday (August 6 through 8). Tickets cost $20 to $35; call 314-956-6735 or visit to learn more and to make a purchase.
