Road House has, despite all probability and common sense, become a touchstone of American pop culture. That's entirely down to the acting chops of its star, Patrick Swayze, who brings all of his charm and earnest cowboy mannerisms to the role of Dalton. Dalton's a laid back bouncer-for-hire who arrives in the small town of Jasper, Missouri, to bring peace to the notoriously dangerous Double Deuce road house. In doing so he finds love and kills a couple guys with his bare hands. It's not a great film, but it is damned entertaining. Swayze would have been 61 today. Highway 61 Roadhouse (34 South Old Orchard Avenue, Webster Groves; 314-968-0061 or

Road House tonight at 8 p.m. Admission is free, and there will be birthday cake while it lasts.
