Opportunity Awaits

Having the opportunity, nay, luxury, to fully immerse yourself in another culture is not something that happens for everyone, or probably even most people. It takes time, money and guts to move out of your comfort zone -- plus, you need an opportunity -- and not everyone gets the chance they need to make it happen. However, we all have a little contingency plan offered to us this weekend, by way of the African Film Festival (www.wupa.wustl.edu/africanfilm). Showcasing eight films from the continent, this mini-immersion experience provides glimpses into countries including Morocco (Farewell Exile), South Africa (Man on Ground), Kenya (Nairobi Half Life) and Namibia (100 Bucks) through film shorts, feature-length works and panel discussions post-screenings. The festival is hosted by Washington University's Brown Hall in Room 100 (Forsyth and Skinker boulevards); screenings are free and are held at 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday (March 22 through 24), with a youth matinee on Saturday at 1 p.m. (at which award-winning director Stephanie Shonekan discusses her Lioness of Lisabi after it screens).
