There's only one place in St. Louis where you can take engagement photos, catch a summer concert, and find out just how hungry a Venus flytrap really is: the Missouri Botanical Garden (4344 Shaw Boulevard; 314-577-5100 or www.mobot.org). It wouldn't exist without Henry Shaw, the philanthropist who would have been 214 years old. In Shaw's honor the garden offers free admission today, and is also throwing a 19th-century-themed party from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. that includes jugglers, puppetry and a stilt walker. Both the Lichtenstein Victorian District and the Kresko Victorian Garden are in full bloom, and the historic Museum Building -- normally closed to the public -- will be open for tours today only. Don't forget to pay your respects by visiting Shaw's Tower Grove House and mausoleum, or do it verbally, as Shaw himself (along with other Victorian-era-dressed actors) will be around to greet guests while strolling the grounds.
