Philadelphia Freedom: A Survey Of Abstract Painting Today From The City of Brotherly Love

New York may be the epicenter of the contemporary American art scene, but that doesn't mean it's the only place artists are at work today. Philadelphia Freedom: A Survey of Abstract Painting Today from the City of Brotherly Love, the new show at Philip Slein Gallery, features work by five painters from cheesesteak-ylvania. Each has their own approach to the abstract school. Tim McFarlane uses a vocabulary of hard-edged, linear gestures that create a nestlike effect; Rebecca Rutstein's paintings are inspired by her interest in geology and shifting scale, which results in delicate membranes of paint that appear to be deflating and expanding simultaneously.
