New York may be the epicenter of the contemporary American art scene, but that doesn't mean it's the only place artists are at work today.
Philadelphia Freedom: A Survey of Abstract Painting Today from the City of Brotherly Love, the new show at Philip Slein Gallery, features work by five painters from cheesesteak-ylvania. Each has their own approach to the abstract school. Tim McFarlane uses a vocabulary of hard-edged, linear gestures that create a nestlike effect; Rebecca Rutstein's paintings are inspired by her interest in geology and shifting scale, which results in delicate membranes of paint that appear to be deflating and expanding simultaneously.
