The cultural argument concerning the continuing existence of books in the digital age rumbles on apace, with neither the pro-book crowd nor the book-doomers knowing for certain who's right. Printer/designer Ken Botnick is more concerned with "how a book means in the world." Yeah. Think about it. Botnick creates books that are art objects to be admired, and he creates typographical sculptures that can be read. It's all part of his ongoing quest to force us to reconsider the book as a means of information transmission, as a work of art and as a product of human imagination and ingenuity. Ken Botnick: Typographies is the artist's first solo show in St. Louis, and it features Botnick's books, prints and sculptures. Typographies opens with a free public reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 11, at the Craft Alliance in the Delmar Loop (6640 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-725-1177 or www.craftalliance.org). Botnick's work remains on display through Sunday, March 24. The gallery is open every day except Monday.
