Mel Brooks isn't for everyone, we guess, but we wouldn't want to imagine life without him. Brooks is right there in the upper tier of the pantheon of American comedic geniuses. By the late '80s he had scored big with brilliant genre spoofs on musicals (The Producers), Westerns (Blazing Saddles) and horror flicks (Young Frankenstein), so in 1987 he turned his loon's lens upward to outer space -- and notched another box office hit. Spaceballs stars Brooks himself, Rick Moranis, John Candy, Bill Pullman and Joan Rivers in mutant Star Wars rip-off that also skewers the merchandising machine attendant with big-budget summer flicks. Spaceballs screens at 6:30 p.m. this evening at the Central branch of the St. Louis Public Library (1301 Olive Street; 314-241-2288 or www.slpl.org) as part of the It Came From (or Went To) Outer Space! series.
