Presence Felt

Thus far, most of the focus this summer has been narrowly concentrated on what isn't: namely, rain and fireworks. While an absence in these areas makes for rough gardening and cheerless Independence Day celebrations, "what isn't" within visual artwork isn't necessarily a loss, as illustrated by Ghosts Before Breakfast, the new exhibition at White Flag Projects (4568 Manchester Avenue; 314-531-3442 or www.whiteflagprojects.org). Stephen Prina, one of seven artists who have works on view, frames missing paintings, drawing the eye equally to the space within the silhouette as to the border itself and beyond. Similarly, the works of N. Dash, Davis Rhodes and Adam McEwen highlight the negative in the positive space and vice versa, subtlety expanding the parameters of their pieces. The show -- which also includes artworks by Chris Burden, Pamela Rosenkranz and Scott Lyall -- opens with a free reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, and remains on view through Saturday, August 18. White Flag is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.
