Quest for the Cup

The Labor Day weekend is a big week for cycling in St. Louis, with the Staenberg Group Gateway Cup taking place in four historic neighborhoods on four successive days (Friday, August 30, through Monday, September 2; www.gatewaycup.com). The big finale is the Benton Park Classic on Monday, which stars a big and demanding course that challenges even experienced racers. The starting line is near the intersection of Arsenal Street and Missouri Avenue, and the course describes a pair of rectangles set at 90 degrees that overlap in front of the Venice Cafe. The first race (Juniors) starts at 10 a.m., and then continues throughout the day. Women's Pros race at 1:05 p.m., and the Men's Pros start at 2:05 p.m., but don't leave when they streak across the finish line or you'll miss the kids race, which is a Big Wheel sprint. All your little racer needs to enter is a helmet, a $5 entry fee and a suggested donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters.
