Christmas probably means as many different things to different people as there are dollars to be made by selling parking spaces for Super Bowl games -- as in, a
lot. But if the holiday can be reduced to just one visual theme, it would be lights, lights and more lights. Christmas is the time for brilliant displays of illumination; the multitudes of lit-up homes, businesses, public buildings and parks not only serve to celebrate the Yuletide but ease the way into winter's brief days of sunlight and much longer nights. A certain famous department store chain is doing its part to make downtown St. Louis festive and brightly lit:
Macy’s Festival of Lights returns to Kiener Plaza (Seventh and Chestnut streets) today with special holiday activities beginning at 4:30 p.m. The light display is turned on at 6 p.m., marking the official start of the holiday season downtown. The event is free; visit
