Red or Blue?

The Wachowski Brothers' Matrix series is the text book example of beating a great idea to death with sequels and spin-offs. The original – and still the best – film in the entire canon is The Matrix, a heady blend of Philip K. Dick paranoia, hard science fiction theory, martial arts adventure and existential musing that flows through and around the inimitable Keanu Reeves. The Wachowski Brothers' visual flair and technological wizardry changed the way Hollywood presented science fiction, moving it away from space ships and blasters and into a darker realm of overt sociopolitical commentary – they also gave us bullet time, a special effect that has also been beaten near to death. Forget the parodies and homages and go see the real deal at 7:30 p.m. this evening on the big screen at Webster University's Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-9487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries). Admission is $5 to $6.
