Rowdy Rolling Ride

Alaska's annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race pits dog sled racers against one another in a cross-country competition from Anchorage to Nome that lasts one to two weeks. Opt for a less time-consuming, more animal-friendly local alternative today at the 2013 Downtown St. Louis Idiotarod. Unlike Alaska's 40-year-old event, the Idiotarod sees humans trade places with sled dogs for a jaunt beginning at the Old Post Office Plaza (Ninth and Locust streets). Teams select a theme for themselves and their cart, and then dress and decorate appropriately. Then they run through downtown St. Louis, stopping at various checkpoints along the way. The winner isn't determined by speed but costume, team spirit and best cart. Admission is free for spectators, and the race begins at noon. For more information visit www.downtownstl.org.
