Seems Like Old Times

The 2007 baseball season is barely two weeks old, yet already it feels like the year’s almost over. How best to savor the sweet nectar of the Cardinals’ World Series victory? If your Redbird mania is still raging, and you just can’t get enough baseball-related fun in your life, head to the St. Louis County Library Headquarters (1640 South Lindbergh Boulevard, Ladue; 314-994-3300 or www.slcl.org) at 7 p.m. for author John Heidenry’s discussion of his book, The Gashouse Gang. Dirty, tough and scrappy, the Gashouse Gang was the legendary 1934 edition of the Cardinals. That team also beat the Detroit Tigers to take home the hardware, and it sported such legends of the diamond as Frankie Frisch, Leo Durocher and Dizzy Dean — not to mention hard-hitting first baseman Ripper Collins. Admission is free, and books will be available for purchase.
