It's been good and cold lately. You know this, because everybody who comes inside says — so loudly as if it's a government secret — that winter in St. Louis is cold. You know where you won't hear these hothouse flowers crying about the cold? Outside, hombre. Ditch the office, lace up the skates and take it to Steinberg Skating Rink in Forest Park (400 Jefferson Drive; www.steinbergskatingrink.com or 314-367-7465). All the kids are back in school, all the crybabies are inside sobbing softly in their polar fleece while drinking herbal tea — that means you have the ice all to yourself. All right, there's probably a few other red-faced, chapped-lip diehards out there, but they know the score. Work on your crossovers and hockey stops on that gloriously big sheet of ice and know — know with utter certainty — that if it drops another twenty degrees it'll feel like you're skating on glass. Steinberg is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday through Sunday, February 28. Admission is $5.50 to $6.50 and skate rental is a mere $3.
