Ancient Egyptians were just as enchanted with music as we are today. They believed that the goddess Hathor invented music and that Osiris then used it to civilize the world; we believe it has power "to soothe the savage breast." Our shared love of music serves as the inspiration for the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus' fifth concert of the season, The Ancients Speak -- Egyptian. The program features a selection of songs inspired by the Egyptians, including Sir Granville Bantock's Songs of Egypt and Elisabeth Lutyens' "Lament of Isis," from her opera Isis and Osiris. Former pharaoh Akhenaten even gets another moment in the spotlight when the chorus performs his "Hymn to the Sun" in a musical setting by Danish composer Vagn Holmboe. The concert takes place at 3 p.m. at John Burroughs School (755 South Price Road, Ladue; 636-458-4343 or www.chamberchorus.org). Tickets are $10 to $28.
