Spook City

Hauntings off the deep end

Contrary to what the mainstream media would have you think, spooks don't take a holiday after Halloween. In fact, deep in the heart of Alton, Illinois, sits the Mineral Springs Hotel, formerly an exclusive retreat and spa that now stands empty in the wake of a horrifying history filled with murder, suicide and accidental deaths. This evening, the doors of the hotel will creak open for a Walk in the Dark Tour and Commemorative Séance (your hosts are pictured; from left to right, Janet Kolar, Wayne Hensley and Crystal Beacon). Brave souls are instructed to meet at 301 East Broadway, and tickets for the walking tour are $30 (arrive at 7:30 p.m.). You can add dinner for a total of $50 (arrive at 7 p.m.), and the overnight stay — not in the hotel, but at the bottom of the hotel's haunted pool! — comes in at $100 (beginning at 7 p.m. also). Sleeping bags for the overnight are recommended; holy water is optional. For more details and to purchase tickets, visit www.mineralspringshauntedtours.com or call 866-465-3205.
