Most holiday concerts are of the "traditional" variety, meaning the same old tunes are performed in the same old way. While this is nice for those who like consistency (and upright naps in public), this time of year needs the kind of spicing up that only the Gateway Men's Chorus can provide. During this group's upcoming Holiday! concerts, scheduled at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday (December 14 and 15) at the 560 Music Center (560 Trinity Avenue, University City), expect to hear a festive balance of old and new songs, pop and traditional tunes -- and expect to hear them expertly sung. The diverse program includes everything from a mashup of Madonna's "Holiday" with Kool & the Gang's "Celebration," to "Over the Skies of Yisrael" and "Hanukkah in Santa Monica," in honor of Hanukkah, to Vivaldi's "Gloria in Excelsis," sung in Latin (!), which certainly ought to keep folks on their toes and please those who need a little "new" mixed in with the tried-and-true this holiday season. Tickets to Holiday! cost $25 and are available at www.gmcstl.org; you'll find more information about the concerts there, too.
