Summer Smooches

Summer in St. Louis can drive you to distraction, what with the heat and its accompanying blanket of moisture. But you can't stay inside and watch reruns the whole season when live theater hits the stage right in Forest Park! Get up and get to the Muny (www.muny.org) for this week's show, Cole Porter's Kiss Me, Kate, which is based on the Bard's The Taming of the Shrew. You know the story (anyone seen 10 Things I Hate About You?): Woman hates man, man torments woman, man and woman live happily ever after. In Porter's play within a play, actors are rehearsing a musical version of Shrew, while their offstage lives parallel the love battles in the play. By the time "Too Darn Hot" opens the second act, you'll have forgotten the weather and instead will be engrossed in the comedy and gender wars unfolding onstage. Tickets for reserved seats cost $10 to $68 (through www.metrotix.com), and performances begin at 8:15 p.m. Monday through Sunday (June 27 to July 3).
